Cooling solution

I just ordered a Jupiter, but no where on the product page does it mention if it comes with a cooler, or any info on what type of cooler fits.
From the pictures it kind of looks like some kind of mobile CPU cooler but yeah can’t find any solid info.
Milk V staff do you have any info on the cooler?

Same here. If I have to buy a separate heat sink, I would like to buy it now before the board arrives.

This heatsink is suitable, but you can also choose other heatsinks of the same size. The 4012 heatsink is quite common and often appears on some SBCs.

In actual usage scenarios, I don’t think a heatsink is necessary.

Amazing!
Thank you so much, that is very helpful
From what I can tell from the documentation, I think you are right and not much cooling will be required.

This FAN should start at a specific temperature ?

According to this file arch/riscv/boot/dts/spacemit/k1-x_milkv-jupiter.dts · Bianbu Linux/linux-6.1 - Gitee.com, scroll to line 1038. All trip points are set to passive, so the CPU must be very hot before the fan activates.

There is a pull request to make the fan activate earlier: riscv: dts: milkv-jupiter: set 40 and 55 degree C trips to active · Pull Request !4 · Bianbu Linux/linux-6.1 - Gitee.com, but it has not been accepted or merged yet.

Thank you for the information, since I installed my board into a Huntkey H702 Mini ITX case and wanted fan running all the time, I connected fan to 3V3 and GND

Since it isn’t written in that clearness in the documentation and for everybody who wants to use the FAN header of the jupiter board:

It’s 5V and you need a JST GH 1.25 2p plug for it!

The Radxa 4012 is pretty cheap, but ordering it internationally more than 4x the price. I’ve seen many 40x40mm coolers and heatsinks online, but none that have the two mounting feet required.

Is there a ‘standard’ name for this type of cooler? I’m trying to find something that I can buy locally.

cheaper one here ?

but this fan requires DC 12v

yes, so while the raxda fan/heatsink is suitable currently it wont spin up at board startup and only at the trip temps as found by @cwt

so you could add just heatsink at least

im running my 5v fan with 3v3, i have ordered some of those 12v gpu coolers also and might check if they run ok with 5v when i receive them

Thanks for the reply, as it might be useful for others, but this just opens a page saying it’s not available in my region.

Hi all,

Do i need any TIM or anything to apply to the M1 when fitting the cooler mentioned in this thread to the Jupiter ?

For the Jupiter board with the M1, I used a dab of thermal paste on the CPU (metal package), and a 1.5mm thick thermal pad on the memory (plastic package) - mostly to help keep the heatsink level.

Given the power levels in play here, I wouldn’t say the thermal compound is necessary, but there’s no reason not to use it.

I installed a passive heatsink from an old GeForce 4 MX GPU - it had the correct offset 55mm hole spacing. Combined with a fan for general airflow in the enclosure, it works well enough so that typical temperatures under a compilation load stay under 45°C or so.

I have ordered the following pads Pardon our interruption...

The pack of 10 10mm x 10mm x 1mm

though from what you say the memory may need a taller pad ? can i just double up the 1mm pads ?
